TREATMENT

What will happen on my first visit?

I will ask about your: current symptoms; medical history; and general well being. I will  examine your body and tongue, and also feel your pulses on both wrists. The aim is to discover which energy(ies) need to be adjusted for your health to improve.

Fine needles will be inserted into specific areas on the body to affect the functioning of the energy channel(s) and associated organ(s) requiring adjustment.  These areas may not be close to the part of the body where the problem is experienced. For example, although you may suffer from headaches, needles may be inserted in your foot or hand. (You should be aware that I  may need to access points on your torso as well as on your arms and legs).

Your first appointment will last approx 1 ½ hours. Subsequent treatments will last up to one hour.

Do I have to prepare in any way?

Try not to have a big meal within an hour of your appointment as the process of digestion will alter the pattern of your pulse. Also avoid alcohol on the day of treatment, and immediately prior to treatment avoid food/drinks which colour your tongue (such as coffee).

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture is not painless but neither can it be described as painful. Most people's experience of needles is of those used in injections and blood tests. Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to these. They are much finer,  solid rather than hollow and obviously do not force or withdraw any fluid into or from your body, (the main source of pain associated with injections or sampling). When the acupuncture needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling.

What about the needles used?  Is it safe?

BAcC members such as myself use single-use, pre-sterilised, disposable needles, which are disposed of after each treatment. These procedures have been approved by the Department of Health, and provide protection against the transmission of infectious diseases.

How will I feel after acupuncture?

Usually rather relaxed and calm. Occasionally you may feel tired/drowsy for a few hours if the treatment has been particularly strong or there may be a short term flare up of your symptoms as your Qi clears and resettles itself.

How will I respond to treatment?

Responses to treatment vary from person to person, as every individual is unique. Some patients notice an initial improvement in their overall state of health, followed by an improvement in the main complaint.  Others may notice a marked improvement in their main complaint straight away.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

I would initially recommend a course of 6 treatments, the frequency of which will depend on the severity of the symptoms.  On the sixth session we would review progress and levels of satisfaction.  It is important to bear in mind that the longer a condition has been present the greater the number of treatments required to effect rebalance.

Why should I go to a BAcC member?

BAcC members have an extensive training in acupuncture and bio medical sciences appropriate to the practice of acupuncture in the UK. They are also bound by Codes of Ethics, Practice and Disciplinary Procedures, and are fully insured.
